Muslims 4 Ken blog aims to vote out Boris Johnson

A new blog site has been set up to encourage Muslims to come out on May 1 and vote for the London Mayor Ken Livingston

The Muslims 4 Ken blog has been launched by the British Muslim Initiative (BMI) in a bid to stop his nearest rival Tory Boris Johnson becoming the next mayor.

"Ken Livingstone is the best choice you can make on May 1st. He's stood up in support of a multicultural society, supported Muslims against racism and Islamophobia and helped improve the lives of all London's communities. Boris Johnson would be a disaster for London. He is an Islamophobe who has insulted and condemned Islam and Muslims. We must not sit by and allow Boris Johnson to become the next Mayor and stir up more Islamophobia against London's Muslims - make your vote count on may 1st," the blog warned.

In the last week Boris' lead over Ken has been cut in half, according to a poll on Monday.

With less than three weeks to go before Londoners vote on May 1, Johnson's advantage over the Labour mayor has been cut to just six percent.

The YouGov poll in the Evening Standard put the Tory on 45 percent, six points ahead of the mayor on 39 percent.

The last survey put Johnson on 49 percent, with Livingstone on 36.

The mayor said the polls showed that the race was still wide open and appealed to new voters to back him.

"Every Londoner can now be sure their vote will count in this election," he said. "More than 350,000 Londoners will have a vote for the first time at this election and I particularly appeal to them to keep our city going forward."

The blog also has a link to a campaign website called 'Stop Boris' (www.stopboris. org) which aims to "encourage people to exercise their right to vote to stop him becoming Mayor".

The site claims: "Boris is quite entertaining as a posh buffoon on Have I Got News For You? and other light entertainment programming, but he can barely organise his own life, let alone a thriving city like London."

In a BMI statement, the group said that the upcoming London Mayoral elections are "without a doubt the most significant elections for Londoners, and particularly Muslims, in recent years".

The Muslims 4 Ken blog also has a video interview with Ken conducted by Anas Altikriti, spokesman for the Muslim Association of Britain (MAB).

"Boris Johnson talks all the time about political correctness, " Ken states, which he says is a code for "a little England mentality".

"If you want to live here you've got to become English; you've got to leave your culture behind," he says of Johnson.

But he adds: "That I think would be very bad. I think London's success, why so many people want to come here, is because there is that freedom to be yourself as long as you don't interfere with others."

With Ken and Johnson neck and neck in the polls, BMI said "the choice is between an open-minded Mayor with a proven track record of successfully running London and engaging with all communities, and an intolerant Islamophobe who has a history of repeatedly insulting black and Muslim communities"

BMI said that "it is not surprising, then, that the racist British National Party has chosen to support him [Boris] and has called on their supporters to give him their second-preference votes".

BMI states: "Given that there is only one per cent between the two candidates, your vote really can make a huge difference particularly if all of London's 700,000-plus Muslims make sure their voices are counted."
