What are the prospects of PAS bouncing back from its losses it suffered in the 2004 General elections?
February 29, 2008
But this time, PAS is confident of regaining Terengganu from the Barisan Nasional. Deputy President of PAS, Nasharudin Mat Isa says the state has yet to benefit from off shore oil wealth, He recalls PAS's contributions to Terengganu when it was in control of the state government from 1999 to 2004.
NM: When we first came into in 1999, Terengganu is the second most poorest state in despite the fact that they have got petrol, they have got many other natural resources, as revenue to the state but they have failed to really manage that wealth for the benefit of the people. So what we did is when we came to power in 1999, we came in with policies, we gave priority to projects which are really benefiting the people so when we came in 1999, we bring up all these things and in less than three years, we have managed to uplift Terengganu in that index which is no longer second most poorest, we managed to bring it up to four but in 2004 when we didnt make it, it took them about two years to get back the number two trophy.
Nasharudin Mat Isa says PAS strategy in Terengganu is to compare its achievements with that of the present UMNO state government.
NM: Popular vote which we gained from last election is quite interesting also. It didnt really drop to that significant. The popular vote is still there. So what we have been doing for the last four years is trying to gain back that popularity and increase more of that popularity and try to offer and try to remind people and compare what we did from 1999 to 2004 and what the current state government is doing or have been doing since 2004 to 2008. So the period, is about the same, four years but its quite obvious that there is many changes that we did compared to what they have done.
But what about Kelantan? What are the chances of PAS retaining power in Kelantan amidst determination by UMNO to win. Nasharudin Mat Isa is confident.
NM: Well, as we say, Insha Allah, yeah. We will try our best to ensure that we retain that state and also to gain back Terengganu. Well I have been in Kelantan and looking in the mood and looking at the sentiment of the people and well, I am quite confident that we will retain Kelantan.
The PAS leader criticised UMNO for indulging in what he called money politics.
NM: We have got the popular statement that we have been making for years, whenever it is election, being part of the opposition group, we are facing with the 3Ms Money, Machinery, Media. So money wise, we cant compete, they come in billions, we come in just few hundred thousands. So we cant say much about money and machinery because they own that. So dominance, yes they are very dominant in almost everything but what we hope this year round for this 12th general elections, is the peoples will to change and that is our message. When we offer in our manifesto a state of care and services, we do hope that people could realize that what they have experienced for the last four years, for the last 50 years in fact, being a wealthy country but where is that wealth when it comes to answering the need of the people.
Kedah is the other Malay state which will see intense competition between PAS and UMNO. Dr Kamarulnizam Abdullah, from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia sums up the partys chances
KA: Some observers say that PAS might come back, especially in Kedah and in Terengganu. I see that PAS has strong followers in Kelantan although I think UMNO said that this election is the one that they will take over PAS but PAS has been there for 18 years and that theres no issue at all against PAS at this 12th General Elections. I think in these three states, UMNO has to work very hard to retain the majority in Kedah and in Terengganu and try to get back Kelantan.
But it is Kelantan which is the key, Ibrahim Suffian, from the opinion research firm, the Merdeka Centre explains why.
IS: In Kelantan I think it is even more important because it shapes the future of Malay politics over the next decade and what we have seen is that given certain trends which indicate that there is a possibility that major seats in the cities will fall to opposition, particularly the DAP, I think it is important for PM Abdullah as the president of UMNO, to showcase to his constituents within the party in the next partys elections that he has been able to unite the Malays and the most tangible evidence of being able to do that is to win Kelantan, some thing that even Dr Mahatir wasnt able to do.
In PAS's recently released manifesto, the party strategically left out the words Islamic state and replaced it with the term welfare state. Is PAS shedding its Islamic image in its battle with UMNO for votes? Will the change in strategy widen its political appeal and how will its traditional supporters see the move? The answer lies with voters on Polling Day.
