BMI REGARDS GOVERNMENT BAN OF AL QARADAWI
A 'DISGUSTING AND OUTRAGEOUS'

After one year of indecision the Labour Government has finally succumbed to neo-conservative pressure by refusing a visitor's visa to the eminent Shaykh Dr.Yusuf Al Qaradawi. The British Muslim Initiative (BMI) regards this decision disgusting and outrageous carried out to appease a few high-ranking pro-Zionists in the Department of Communities and Local Government and right-wing politicians and media.

BMI President Muhammad Sawalha said, 'We would have to go as far back as the Medieval Age when scholars were hounded and vilified in order to find a similar retrograde decision.'

Shaykh Yusuf Al Qaradawi is the most prominent Muslim scholar worldwide and the incumbent President of the International Union of Muslim Scholars as well as the European Council of Fatwa and Research. The government decision to bar the eminent scholar constitutes an unwarranted insult to British Muslims and all Muslims around the world. The negative impact of this ban is no less than that of banning the Pope from entering any of the Muslim countries.

By denying Shaykh Al Qaradawi the Brown government has missed a rare opportunity to correct previous indiscretions of granting visas to notorious war criminals and human rights abusers such as Shaul Movaz, Augusto Pinochet and Narendra Modi. This double standard against Muslims is becoming the norm of political practise by the government and opposition alike. In fact many of the government decisions in relations to Muslims are now taken in neo-conservative circles and 'thin-tanks' .

Shaykh Al Qaradawi would be debarred physically but his noble ideas and moderate teachings would continue to inspire and guide hundreds of millions of Muslims the world over.
