Analysis by Terence Fernandez
PETALING JAYA (Feb 18, 2008): There is a guessing game going on in Port Klang. The question on everyone's lips is whether controversial incumbent assemblyman Datuk Zakaria Md Deros will be fielded in the March 8 polls. The answer will be revealed on nomination day, Feb 24, but the speculation is on.

It is understood that Zakaria, 61, has submitted his name for nomination to the State Umno chief, Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr. Mohamad Khir Toyo.

However, for "insurance", Zakaria, the Klang Umno chief has also submitted the names of his son Zainuri and daughter-in- law Roselinda Abdul Jamil (the wife of another son) – ensuring that the his legacy at least survives even if he is dropped.

Incidentally, Zainuri, 32, is the Klang Umno Youth chief, while Roselinda, 30, is the division's Puteri Umno head.

If one were to go back to October 2006, Zainuri and Roselinda were appointed councillors of the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) to replace Zakaria, who has been a councilor since 1983.

The two-term assemblyman had withdrawn his name from the list of councillors following the advice of the Sultan of Selangor, after theSun exposed his litany of misdeeds which included building the now infamous mansion without approval, running an unlicensed satay house owned by Zainuri, not paying assessment for 13 years and even serving as a senator while a bankrupt.

Whoever is nominated, one thing is almost certain - that someone from the House of Zakaria will be Umno's candidate in Port Klang.

"And why not?" asked a senior Selangor politician.

"Zakaria is a good leader. He gets things done. When it comes to bread and butter issues, he always delivers to the community," said the politician.
"Even if Zakaria is not selected, sentiments will prevail and his son and daughter-in- law will sail through the polls because they carry the Zakaria name," said the politican, adding that Zakaria's abrassive nature is "part of his charm".

Speculation that Zakaria would be fielded again to defend his seat became rife mid-last year, following the dropping of all 37 charges against him and five other directors of his two companies for various violations against the Companies Act, by the Companies Commission. He has also been cleared by the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA).

In January he set up a service centre near his controversial mansion. The fact that it was officially opened by Mohamad Khir is an indication of the leadership’s high regard for this powerful politician, regarded by many as the “King Maker”, spearheading many programmes to promote Umno and recruit members. Not too long ago, he even helped Selangor Umno organise a computer literacy programme in far-flung Kota Kinabalu.

He even managed to infiltrate the prime minister’s entourage when the latter was performing the Haj at the height of the controversy.

Among the 60,000 guests at Zakaria’s Hari Raya open house recently were Mohamad Khir and Umno information chief Tan Sri Muhammad Mohd Taib.

Be it Zakaria, Zainuri or Roselinda, the Umno candidate is expected to go up against PAS this time around. In the last elections, Zakaria trumped Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR’s) P. Krishnasamy by 7,237 votes.

With Malays commanding over 56% of the 25,000-plus electorate, Umno has a very good chance of retaining this seat as the Malay-base is very supportive of their present ADUN who has helped them obtain scholarships, jobs, university entrance and vocational training.

One must understand that Zakaria’s misdeeds made national news and made a lot of people who read this news angry; but to his constituents, he has served them well and the illegal mansion is a non-issue,” said an MCA politician.

If he is fielded, the perception on the leadership may not be favourable, but as far as Port Klang constituents are concerned, they will vote for the man with a proven track record of serving the people.” - Sun
