Nurul Izzah Anwar may take on Cabinet minister

SHE may have just given birth to her first child in September but 27-year-old Nurul Izzah Anwar, the eldest daughter of Malaysian opposition icon Anwar Ibrahim, has no intention of letting motherhood stand in the way of her political debut at the general election widely expected in March.

Speaking to Today in an exclusive interview, her mother, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who heads Keadilan, confirmed that members of the opposition party were backing Ms Nurul to contest the polls.

Dubbed “Puteri Reformasi” or “Reform Princess” by the Malaysian media, Ms Nurul who has a Master’s degree in international relations from the Washington-based Johns Hopkins University, was just 18 when her father, then Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, was imprisoned for sodomy and corruption.

“She was very young at the time tragedy befell her family with the arrest of her father. A lot of people sympathised with her,” said Mr Sim Tze Tin, Mr Anwar’s political secretary.

Describing Ms Nurul as “courageous” for her relentless campaign across Malaysia to have her father freed from prison, Mr Sim added: “The time has now come for her to emerge as a political force.”

Like her father, Ms Nurul runs a blog. In her latest posting, the electronic engineer by training wrote about the alleged abuse of detainees imprisoned under Malaysia’s Internal Security Act.

Keadilan party sources told Today that Ms Nurul may be fielded against no less than a Cabinet minister. Her likely opponent will be Ms Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, the Women, Family and Community Development Minister, in the Lembah Pantai parliamentary seat in the upmarket area of Bangsar in Kuala Lumpur.

Lembah Pantai is a relatively multiracial seat with about 55 per cent Malays, 27 per cent Chinese and 18 per cent Indians. It is understood that two other seats in the capital - with a similar racial mix - have also been identified as potential seats where Ms Nurul might contest.
However, the trading of seats to avoid three-cornered contests between Keadilan and other parties such as the Democratic Action Party (DAP) and Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) is still on going.

Keadilan, set up in 1999 while Mr Anwar was in prison, plans to contest 80 seats. If so, it may be the opposition party with the most candidates. At the 2004 poll, Keadilan fielded about 60 candidates.

News of Ms Nurul entering the fray comes just days after it was revealed that Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin, the son-in-law of Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, will also be contesting. - TodayOnline
