Daya Saing Malaysia Ke-8 di Dunia? Telitikan Data Sebenar

image11.jpg

Prime Minister Abdullahs claim that Malaysia is currently ranked 8th in the world in terms of competitiveness is deliberately misleading.

Closer examination of the data reveals that this is true only within the category of countries with a population of 20 million or more.

According to the full World Competitiveness Report 2007 as cited by the Prime Minister, Malaysia is in fact ranked only 23rd in the world. Fifteen of the twenty-two countries ranked above Malaysia in 2007 have populations of less than 20 million people, while seven of the twenty-two have populations exceeding 20 million.

Malaysias competitiveness ranking in 2006 was 22nd, and in 1997, it was 17th.

Prime Minister Abdullahs decision to resort to such misdirection is a weak attempt to hide the fact that Malaysias economic fundamentals have weakened progressively under his government.

Malaysias competitiveness is plumetting and where once our economy stood shoulder to shoulder with countries like Singapore and Hong Kong, we are now ranked 23rd in the world, they are ranked 2nd and 3rd respectively.

We are clearly in need of a higher calibre of leadership if Malaysia is to realise its full potential as an economy of global stature.

Joke of the week

So far, Malaysians have been entertained by the almost farcical proceedings of the commission of inquiry into the Lingam tape. Come on, we all know the real state of the judiciary.

But the joke of the week must be in the Malaysiakini headline just now. I burst out laughing when I read it.

Apparently, he fears money politics and vote-buying tactics will be deployed to stem the ruling coalitions losses.

He cannot be serious.

I remember some serious splashing out of development grants and announcements of development projects during election campaigns of the Mahathir era. Absolutely no understanding of how a caretaker government should behave in the run-up to the polls.

So pardon me while I try to stop laughing.

But of course, the Abdullah administration is unlikely to be any better. Just look at how much money was splashed around during the Ijok by-election campaign. It even prompted Samy Vellu to marvel, Ten years development was delivered in 10 days.

Talk about vote buying!
